Iowa women won’t have to worry about buying any groceries for awhile. They’ve both won free groceries for a year from Iowa farmers.

Luci Heuton of Carroll and Pam Davis from Grand Junction were selected as the grand prize winners of the Iowa Farmers Feed US “Free Groceries for a Year!” sweepstakes that concluded April 11.

Heuton and Davis each received $5,000 in grocery gift cards for use at their local supermarket in separate presentations yesterday. The amount is the average spent on groceries annually per person.

The winners’ names were drawn at random from more than 147,000 Iowa consumer registrations.

For three months, beginning in January 2010, residents from across Iowa were invited to visit www.FarmersFeedUS.org to register for a chance to win. While doing so, they also had the opportunity to meet five Iowa farmers and take a video tour of their farms. Each video explained how the farmers produce safe, nutritious and affordable food for Iowa consumers.

“I loved that consumers from across the state were able to visit my farm online, and see the dedication we have to caring for the land and our animals,” said Jim Brown of Churdan, one of the farmers featured on the site. “As Iowa farmers, we’re proud to showcase our farms, sharing how we raise the food that consumers eat, while also introducing them to our families.”

While the sweepstakes registration period is now over, the Iowa Farmers Feed US web site, featuring information about agriculture in the state, will remain live.

Supporting Iowa agriculture groups include the Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, Iowa Corn Growers Association and Midwest Dairy Association.
