Producers' livelihood depends on the well-being
and health of their animals. New technologies are continually
providing producers with opportunities to better care for their
pigs.
By housing pigs in environmentally controlled
barns, pork producers are able to keep their pigs warm with heating
systems during Iowa's frigid winters and cooled with fans and
misters in hot, humid summers.
Farms that use non-confinement housing systems
rely heavily on bedding to keep the animals comfortable and warm.
Through the Swine Welfare Assurance Program,
the Pork Quality Assurance Program and the Trucker Quality Assurance
Program, producers are taking proactive measures to ensure their
pigs are handled safely and providing the best in animal care.
