Typically, all pork producers
with more than 1250 pigs at one location have a manure management
plan on file with the Department of Natural Resources. A
manure management plan makes certain that all of the manure is
properly applied to fields and ensures that the nutrients are
fully utilized as a natural crop fertilizer. |

All producers follow strict
separation distances, which ensure that there is ample space
between a water source (rivers, streams, creeks, wetlands, floodplains)
and livestock barns, as well as fields where manure is applied. |
