Josh Holthaus, a member of the Devon
Dreamers 4-H Club from New Hampton, Iowa, has a lot to say about
his area pork producers.
It all started when Kevin
Gilbert, a board member of the Chickasaw County Pork Producers,
contacted the 6th grader to see if he would be interested in
reading the radio scripts on behalf of the county group for their
October Pork Month radio promotions.
Josh accepted, and spent the
next several nights reading the scripts out loud over and over
again. Within only a few days of talking to Kevin, Josh was in
the recording studio. Voicing the scripts came easy for Josh
and he needed only one try. "The technology they used in
the recording studio was cool," said Josh as he explained
the computerized editing process the studio technicians used.
Josh had so much fun that
he entered the project under the Societal Issues 4-H category
at the Chickasaw County Fair. Josh's project was one of 29 projects,
out of more than 700 entered, that was selected to move on to
the Iowa State Fair, where he also received a blue ribbon.
Josh is the son of Patrice
and Roger Holthaus of New Hampton. Josh and his two brothers,
Jayson and Jordan, help on the farm with breeding and chores.
Josh also showed hogs at the county and state fair.
Though Josh admits he "had a lot of fun" helping the
local pork producers, he doesn't look for a future in radio broadcasting.
"I'd like to be an engineer and study math and science,"
reports Josh.
When asked if he would do
it again? "Of course," said Josh, "It was an honor
just to be asked."
