ork producers handing our pork samples and recipes could be found amidst the flowers and the home improvement displays during the popular Waterloo and Des Moines Home and Garden Shows.

During both shows, the IPPA teamed up with county groups to provide consumers with an information booth and pork experts -- the producers themselves -- to serve samples, talk with consumers and distribute recipes and nutrition information. "As spring approaches and people begin planning outdoor activities, we want them to be thinking about putting pork on the grill, or simply saving time by preparing a quick and easy pork recipe for family and friends," said Sam Carney, chair of the IPPA Promotion Committee.

At the Waterloo Home and Garden Show, area pork producers teamed up with Holland Grills to cook and serve barbecued pork. At the Des Moines Home and Garden Show, pork producers showcased some of the new "heat and serve" pork products that make meals in minutes.

Winter pork picnic treats consumers to pork lunch

Grill outside in Januaryin Iowa? You bet. Thanks to a group of pork producers in town for the Iowa Pork Congress, Des Moines area consumers were treated to grilled pork burgers during the annual Winter Pork Picnic.

Over 2800 consumers enjoyed a picnic lunch of ground pork and bacon burgers, chips, pop and ice cream at this year's picnic. While eating their lunch, attendees were entertained by a live remote from Des Moines' Star 102.5 Radio.

"The Winter Pork Picnic is a great way for us to showcase pork to the general public while celebrating the Iowa Pork Congress, which brings over 5000 pork producers to Des Moines," said Sam Carney, IPPA Promotion Committee chair.

Carney also mentioned that the promotion wouldn't happen without the help of numerous pork producers and the county queens who were in town for the Iowa Pork Queen Contest. "Also, I want to extend a special thanks to the Tama County Pork Producers who grill for this annual event," said Carney.

Companies participating in this year's Winter Pork Picnic were Fareway Stores, Webster City Custom Meats, Cookies Food Products, Old Dutch Potato Chips, Pepsi Americas, Sara Lee Bakery and Wells Blue Bunny.

Thank you to all the pork producers
who made these promotions a huge success!
