Krug of Ames nominated the restaurant. "We visit the restaurant
often for its family atmosphere and great food that reminds us
of home cooking," said Krug. "Our family has been involved
in the pork industry for most of our lives. We're always looking
for a restaurant that serves good pork dishes and Suburban's
is one of our favorite places."
Suburban Restaurant, located
just north of Ames, is owned by sisters Suzy Lyon, Diane Cox,
Pat Ellingson and Nancy Bates. Only Suzy and Diane are actively
involved in operating the restaurant.
"This is a great way to promote local restaurants
that residents rely on for a good meal and family traditions,"
said Nelda Christian, Chair of the IPPA Restaurant and Foodservice
Committee. "Most of the restaurants nominated were located
in small rural communities and are oftentimes solely supported
by farm families and local residents. We are happy to be able
to recognize these restaurants that are doing their part to support
local pork producers by menuing pork year-round."
Second
and third place honors were awarded to Stinky's Restaurant in
Aplington and Slaby's Restaurant in Walcott.
The contest was advertised in
May and nominees were judged throughout July and August. The
judging committee consisted of Nelda Christian, Dixie Hodson
and Ann Hogberg, all representatives of the Iowa pork industry.
As winners of the contest, The
Suburban Restaurant received $200 and a plaque to display in
the restaurant. Almost 50 restaurants across Iowa were nominated
for the award. Finalists had to have a minimum of two nominations.
Funded by the Pork Checkoff,
the IPPA Restaurant and Foodservice Committee works to increase
demand for pork by sponsoring local, state and national restaurant
competitions, culinary workshops and restaurant promotions throughout
Iowa and the U.S.
