Results of the annual membership survey show powerful support of IPPA's checkoff-funded programs. Mailed in November to each association member, the survey guides the delegate body and producer leaders to develop more effective policies and positions for upcoming programs.

When asked the level of support for checkoff programs, producers selected from the options of strongly support, support, do not support or eliminate program.

Programs with 95% support or greater include the following:

Consumer information programs that include activities that communicate pork nutritional messages to consumers and health professionals, advertising campaigns and recipe development and distribution.

New pork products awards that encourage retailers, processors and food service operators to create new pork products to increase the consumption of pork.

Nutritional programs that inform health care professionals, educators and wellness coordinators through conference presentations, speeches and exhibits.

Iowa State Fair programs that include the IPPA Farrowing Display, new product promotion in the Agriculture Building and various displays around the fairgrounds.

Programs with over 90% support include the following:

Pork advertising campaigns that include radio and TV spots, billboards and print advertisements.

Community projects that promote pork at public events, such as the Winter Pork Picnic and Waterloo Home Show, as well as in shopping malls and local businesses.

Retail merchandising programs that sponsor pork promotions in Iowa and in metro cities across the U.S. This includes the Annual Fareway promotion and sponsorship of the ARCA racecar retail promotions.

Restaurant and foodservice programs that encourages new pork products on menu items, promotion of pork products to foodservice institutions and coordination of the Taste of Elegance programs.

Foreign market development programs that increase demand for pork in foreign countries. Programs include membership with the United States Meat Export Federation and coordination of producer delegations to Japan, Mexico and China to increase pork exports.

The majority of the remaining programs, including the county cooperative advertising, culinary arts, K-12 educational, Pork Quality Assurance, producer education, environmental, producer communications, meat science and nutrition, research projects and disease management programs all ranked high with an over 80% approval rating.

Programs rating between 60-80% support include the Iowa Pork Queen, Pork Youth Ambassador, niche marketing and seedstock programs.

Of the 65% of respondents who have attended nutrient management courses, 76% said that they were beneficial to their operation. When asked whether commercial fertilizer is regulated by cost and is therefore not over applied by farmers, 47% agreed and 43% disagreed. The majority of respondents (47%) disagreed that commercial fertilizer should be regulated for application rates, with 36% agreeing that it should be regulated and 17% with no opinion.

Asthma

The survey also revealed that 91% of respondents have no known asthma cases among themselves or their immediate family. Of the remaining 9% that responded yes, the number of cases within that family was one.
