Advanced swine reproduction seminar being held in Waverly June 14

A seminar will be held next month in northeast Iowa specifically for hog farmers who manage or own a sow herd.

Iowa State University Extension, the Iowa Pork Industry Center and the Iowa Pork Producers Association are sponsoring an advanced swine reproduction seminar on June 14 at the Waverly Civic Center in Waverly.
The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m,
Speaker topics include managing the farrowing process and environment, keys to reaching superior reproductive performance, factors that influence reproductive health and sow housing.
University of Missouri swine specialist Dr. Tim Safranski will lead a discussion of management practices and farrowing room environment, which can improve survivability and herd productivity. He also will address keys for achieving superior reproductive performance.
Dr. Rodney “Butch” Baker, DVM, ISU Vet Diagnostic & Production Animal Medicine, will outline the key factors that influence reproductive health and share management tips with awareness of new technologies that can improve reproductive success.
Mark Storlie, ISU Extension swine field specialist, will review gestation housing considerations for pen group housing vs. individual sow housing. Two farmers who currently have pen and individual gestation housing will share their observations and experiences. One producer has a trickle feed system and the other uses electronic feeding stations. Do you have a plan for transitioning to pens?

“Managing gilt development programs for lifetime performance,” a presentation originally given at the 2011 Leman Swine Conference, also will be provided by Storlie.
