Environmental Stewardship

Sustainability in Pig Farming

Raising livestock takes specialized care. With advancements in technology and continued innovation, raising pigs is becoming more sustainable every year. Farmers use practices like manure management and crop rotation to maintain soil health. Additionally, planting crops and harnessing renewable energy helps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Protecting Our Waterways

Water quality is important to every Iowan.

Many farmers use cover crops and no-till farming practices to ensure soil and nutrients stay in fields, where they need them, and out of waterways. Coupled with active monitoring practices, farmers are constantly reviewing and revising their practices to maintain safe soil and water.

Manure Management

Manure is more than just animal waste. Packed with essential nutrients, manure is used to replenish the soil as a natural fertilizer and grow next year’s crop.

Farmers use advanced technology to analyze nutrient profiles in both manure and soil. Then, the manure is applied only to the places it’s needed in the field. This precision application process ensures those valuable nutrients don't go to waste.

This process is outlined in each Iowa pig farmers’ manure management plan.

Conservation & Air Quality

Repurposing waste as fertilizer, planting crops that remove carbon from the air and utilizing renewable energy sources are just a few of the many ways farmers practice conservation.
