Welcome to Episode 20, where we dig into how Iowa pig farmers are implementing and measuring more sustainable farming practices to enhance soil health and water quality, and lower energy use. Ashley McDonald, formerly with the National Pork Board and Ben Nuelle with Iowa Pork Producers Association explain how the Pork Cares Farm Impact Report program helps farmers quantify their environmental practices to make a positive impact on soil, water and air quality. Pig farmer Troy Peterson shares his experience with the program, highlighting the environmental and economic benefits, including cost savings on fertilizer and reduced soil erosion.
Episode Highlight Ben Nuelle
Farmers are increasingly interested in measuring their conservation efforts and their impact on soil health and water quality. There's a focus on adopting conservation practices with a shared goal of leaving the land in better condition for future generations.
Episode Highlight Troy Peterson
The National Pork Board's sustainability program gathers data from farms, tracking factors like greenhouse gas emissions, carbon sequestration, erosion and water quality, reflecting farmers' commitment to improving environmental practices and preserving natural resources. In northeast Iowa, measures such as manure storage structures and erosion control have led to significant improvements in water quality and habitat restoration for trout streams.
